Gaga

I know I probably shouldn't fancy Lady Gaga as much as I do but...
her hair does look fantastically attractive here:

I've just got a thing for black and white photography- I think it's beautiful

Lyric of the day

My mum's I-pod was on shuffle in the front room today and Faithless came on so I thought hey- lyric of the day! initially 'We Come One' popped into my head...
"All the subtle flavors of my life have become bitter seeds and poisoned leaves without you. I drain the colour from the sky and turn blue without you"
That's really beautiful but possibly a bit of a mouthfull for my simple 'lyrics of the day' so instead, here is a simpler and more minimal handfull yet still very lovely...
"You're the sun to me" <3

The Rakes

"Two fingers up at those who won't miss us when we pass away"
I really cannot begin to express how much I have fallen in love with The Rakes.
If anyone doesn't know of them [I am aware my only follower atm is my mum but you know, it's early days...] anyway, they are a- in my humble opinion, wonderful, band from London with 3 albums who split in 2009 because they believed in giving: "100% to every gig. If they can’t give it everything then they won’t do it" [I think that's possibly the best reason for a split ever] As Courtney Love said about Kurt Cobain "It's better to burn out than to fade away" To me, The Rakes haven't faded away [and neither has Kurt] because I listen to them all the time and I completely adore them so I decided to write yet another musical essay. Lordy I'm on a roll! Watch out NME ...not reallyy :)

For me, The Rakes bring a clear understanding, a humorous importance and an honest meaning to situations that everybody can relate to. Whether that's getting on the tube for work, seeing 'When Tom Cruise Cries' in a film or waking up in someone else's bed. The lyrics are so true that they make me wonder how I, or anyone else, hadn't thought of them before. Then I realise it's because nobody else could phrase such real feelings and events in the deep, penetrative and visual way that they do. It's as if they can see into the soul of every typical smoker or party goer because deep down, they want the same as all of us.
Essentially, The Rakes are able to portray the emotions of not just themselves, not just the characters they sing about but also the people listening to their music. They mean every single last word and they play every single last guitar chord as if it's their last and they time every single last drum beat as if their life depends on it.
* This is where it get's overly cheesy and I sound like I'm comparing poems for an English exam... *
Similar to The Cure, most of The Rakes songs share an ongoing theme, yet each one is completed to a high standard of difference and forbidden beauty. Each song compliments the previous one in an urgent style leaving you instantly wanting more yet this is accomplished without once using the word 'love'.
And on a final note- "The world was a mess but his hair was perfect"

"Let's make the most of it- the time we've got together.
Quit all the secrets that are choking up your heart
and tearing all the light from the stars.
I say forever, and you just say whatever
but if you feel how i feel, then we'd stay together"

I would have posted a link for that video but it includes the word 'love'
which totally contradicts what I said in the 'essay conclusion' ...deary me

Festivals

I really should have included this into the previous blog but hey- basically, I just remembered that I saw the Horrors at Evolution Festival this year so here is a link to the photos on Facebook :) http://bit.ly/9gPrrD
While I'm on the festival subject, let's talk about Kendal Calling, because I'm going- yay!! You see, I was rather devastated not to be seeing Libertines and Mumford and Sons at Leeds this year, and T in the Park as that's on my birthday. But luckily I did manage to get tickets to see Maximo Park at Split Festival and Doves, Futureheads and the singer from The Levellers at Kendal Calling, which should be wonderfull!
My friend did have a spare ticket to Leeds but I thought it sensible to wait for the Lib's tour and not waste money, which may be slightly foolish. Esspecially after buying a lovely green floral tent and err, sorting out all of my outfits, oh well!
I did manage to camp in my friend's garden which was fun, we let the stray cat in the tent and ended up playing twister outside at half 3 in the morning. Now the only issue is not being able to see Thom Yorke, Lily Allen, Paloma Faith and Plan B at the Big Chill Festival.
It's just difficult not to get caught up in whole festival buzz when everything is so beautiful! who can resist a combination of pattened wellies, fairy wings, face paint and Liam Gallagher cagoules?

I just had to get Lily Allen in there, I might kind of, er... fancy her. Alot.
[I'm in love basically]

Song of the week

This week was the first time I properly listend to the The Horrors second album- it is rather good. My overall evaluation is that- 'Primary Colours' sounds like Farris Rotter is having a sneaky affair with a synthasizer. That's not a bad thing though, the synthasizer is hot so we don't really mind. I am not trying to condone that cheating is acceptable, what I basically mean is that 'Primary Colours' is rather different from 'Strange House' I don't want to say it's calmer but there may be less 'screaming'. Before I dig myself a hole, I will say that I really really love thier first album, but when it comes to the second, I only really love it.
However, I can't get enough of 'Who Can Say'. It is my song of the week because simply, I just love it. Not only are the lyrics amazing, I really like the general sound and as for the part where Farris speaks,, phewft.

"I know these words may only serve to twist the knife...
...But I strive, to make them heard"

....Sorry if that blog sounded cheesy- I was like Fearn Cotton =/

The Cure

One morning [today], I decided to finally make a blog. After months of thinking it would be a good idea I wrote a list of things I wanted to include, here is a few- recently made collages, favourite outfits and songs of the week, photos of what I've been up to and song lyrics of the day.
Whilst writing this list, The Cure decided to play on my I-pod shuffle and I just felt the overwhelming need to listen to all of thier songs. They are amazing. As my diary was in close reach I also felt the need to write about them, one thing lead to another and before I knew it, I'd practically written an essay.
Once complete, I read through and was rather pleased- I say rather pleased I mean I was allmost contemplating becoming a music reviewer! So now I have a blog just like that, I may aswell write up my 'Cure review'. So, here it is... enjoy!

When it comes to The Cure's 'Wish' album and the lyrics to Disintergration I just have to stop what I'm doing and try not to cry. This happens for pretty much all of thier songs and I would very strongly say they are my favourite band. Allthough I love a ridiculous amount of musicians- Maximo Park, Oasis and Foo Fighters to name but a few, and allthough I become obsessed with a ridiculous amount of musicians- Pete Doherty, Carl Barat and Serge Pizzorno for example,  and overall, I become obsessed by the lyrics of a ridiculous amount of musician, e.g. The Smiths, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Mumford and Sons- the ridiculous amount that I feel all of this for The Cure, plus alot more such as Robert Smith's emotional voice and the instruments atmospheric sound, overpowers the love of all others. To the extent where I am in the midst of making a Cure tee-shirt and I constantly feel the need to five star pretty much all of thier songs on my I-pod, simply as honour and comfort. I have over 10 favourite Cure songs and I haven't even heard them all- most are about love, which could be classed as an easy thing to write about- but it's not easy to make each love song wonderfull and significantly different like they do- and not only be able to, ontop of that, provoke such feeling, such thought and such vivid pictures with words and sounds alone. When listening to them, I believe every word Robert sings. They aren't just musicians, they are story tellers.
